3/28/09 - Los Angeles, CA

A few of the PAC's BJJ players took the trip out to LA to participate in the Pan-American Games of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. For those not familiar with the Pan-Ams, it's the second largest tourny in the world. We brought home a couple gold medals in the blue belt division! George McKenna and Will Link took the top of the podium at the end of the day. Billy Stamp and Dan Rob also made the trip. They didn't medal but I'm sure they will go again next year and clean house. That tells you the kind of competition we are talking about here... Dan and Billy are TOUGH!

Here are a couple pictures from George and a write up about his matches...

(more photos and info to come as the guys get it to me)

"First Round Bye

2nd Round:

Faced a wrestler that beat the 2nd place white belt champion from last year. There was some brief grip fighting and my opponent tried to shoot in for a single. I pressed him to the floor and fell into half-guard. Once in half-guard, I locked him down, securing the underhook and his head, passing his half-guard with the pass taught by Brad using the underhook, placing my head on the opposite side securing his head, and using my foot to escape my foot to side control. From side control, I worked the heffner choke (securing the shoulder with my left arm and working my forearm across his neck for the submission.

3rd Round:

Another wrestler. Grip fight led to my opponent trying to pull guard. Instead of being pulled into the guard, I ended up standing with arm and collar grips. Forced my leg through to half-guard, used the same pass from round two to take side control. He was active from the bottom and I took his back and mounted him. I finished the match in his guard with an 8-0 victory.

Championship Match:

A judo guy from San Diego. A long grip fighting match to start the fight. He attempted a hip toss I landed on one knee and popped back up not losing my grips. I jumped guard to take the fight to the ground and attempted a triangle, but didn't secure it and my opponent almost escaped, but I attacked the arm and forced him back into the triangle position and attempted a sweep. During the scramble, he turtled and I took his back, putting in one hook. I rolled him to the side and put the other hook in. He rolled back to all fours and I flattened him out, putting in a clock choke. The match ended with me on my opponents back with the choke in for a 4-0 victory on points."

As a side note, George didn't give up any points or advantages the entire tournament.
